Coaching Emily

On the Radio, Radio

by Emily

On the hottest day of the year so far (in May! May!) I was invited on the radio show of the lovely Dani Maimone, a Marketing and PR Specialist and part-time radio DJ. Brooklands Radio is run totally by volunteers and has a healthy local Surrey based following, providing smooth FM type tunes and the backdrop to a nice weekend in the countryside, as well as guides to visiting local towns and the not-so-far-flung Big Smoke.

Dani got in touch when she saw the Moving Forward from Cancer Webinar I’d put on and wanted to hear how it had gone, and more about the work I do. I have to be honest, I was really excited. Nervous yes, but excited. I think one of my childhood dreams was pretty much to be a radio or TV presenter (I say ‘think’ because you never quite know whether it’s been placed into your memory file from more recent suggestions or thoughts you’re sourcing from!) and I’d really enjoyed the Saturday morning show I’d joined on BBC Surrey the month before, so was super excited to be doing more.

It also strikes me that articulating what I do is really important, which is pretty obvious isn’t it?! In order for people to understand whether they’d tell someone else about the coaching service I run, or the webinars I put on, or even whether they’d get in touch themselves, they have to know what it is I offer and do first.

I haven’t always found writing about what I do very easy, but I do find talking about it more so. Perhaps my verbal umms and errs are the equivalent of drafting, deleting and re-writing a written paragraph, which takes substantially longer to get to the point!

In our few minutes together on the radio, Dani and I covered a range of topics on life with and after cancer. It felt like a normal, friendly and easy chat, which I hope comes across.

I’d like to continue working in a more verbal and visual capacity too. I’m learning when to keep my head still, when to stop moving my hands around, and which bits of the question are really important for listeners and viewers to learn more about.

Perhaps as I master this, I’ll further master how I talk about the service I provide and how it supports people, their family and friends, with and after cancer too.
